From the Classics Route...

Meiningen Theatre
Where the Werra´s substance is still rather more on the delicate side, you can follow the Thuringian Classics Route. In Meiningen, you can experience a small town with a great theatre, presenting classical but also modern works of arts. Well worth seeing are the castles, Elisabethenburg and Landsberg, where nowadays a romantic hotel invites you to stay. Here, the steam train enthusiasts will find the only restoration workshop for steam locomotives in Europe.

Map of the Werra river
In Eisenach the spirit of its famous sons Bach and Luther can be felt in the lovingly arranged museums and memorial sites. And surely you will enjoy the view from high up at the Wartburg castle, today a UNESCO World Heritage site.

...To the Snow Fairy

White bellflowers
Follow the River Werra to the north-west, and you will reach the Werra-Meissner-Land region, at whose centre the Hohe Meissner peak rises. Its abundance of snow earned it a place in a popular children`s story as the home of the fairy-tale character of Frau Holle (who could make it snow by shaking her duvet out of the window). Eschwege is a feast for the eyes: you can gaze to your heart´s content at the sight of more than a thousand historic half-timbered buildings and medieval towers. Starting from Eschwege, you can follow the "Art Cycle Route", where every few kilometres you will come across an amusing or memorable sculpture by various artists. Experience the fairy-tale charms of this landscape from close quarters on the Werra Valley Cycle Route. An ideal starting point is Witzenhausen, famous for its cherries, where - during spring time - you will be welcomed by the sight of 150,000 cherry trees in blossom, before the Werra joins the Fulda in Hannoversch Münden and turns into the river Weser.
