Once the Weser has managed to break through, its reward is the North German lowland plain, where the wooded hills get smaller and smaller and then disappear into a wide-open plain. The Middle Weser then flows leisurely through moor- and heathland, through lush meadows and fertile fields. The towns and villages have preserved their original charm; for example in Nienburg´s old town with its history going back a thousand years. From here it is well worth taking an excursion to Loccum Abbey, one of North Germany's best preserved medieval abbeys.
