A legendary Gorge

Map of the Weser river from Minden to Bremerhaven
One of the most interesting sections along the River Weser is the narrow stretch between Rinteln and the Westphalian Gate, the legendary gorge between the Weser hills and the heights of the Wiehengebirge mountains. Here around Minden you will find the highest concentration of mills in Germany: the "Milling and Baking Days" at weekends are an experience for the whole family. If you start out from Minden you can take an impressive "Porta" cruise, which includes going across the breath-taking waterway crossroads (see picture below), where the Mittelland Canal crosses the Weser.

Into the Lowland Plain

Waterway intersection: the Mittelland Canal crossing the river Weser
Once the Weser has managed to break through, its reward is the North German lowland plain, where the wooded hills get smaller and smaller and then disappear into a wide-open plain. The Middle Weser then flows leisurely through moor- and heathland, through lush meadows and fertile fields. The towns and villages have preserved their original charm; for example in Nienburg´s old town with its history going back a thousand years. From here it is well worth taking an excursion to Loccum Abbey, one of North Germany's best preserved medieval abbeys.

Between the Devil`s Moor and the Ship`s Cobold

Roland statue in Bremen market square
In the beautiful Bremen you can experience the Hanseatic flair of a major city. Its historic market square with the statue of Roland (see picture), the arts and crafts shops in the Böttcherstraße street and the faithfully reconstructed vintage ships on Schlachte Embankment invite you to come and take a stroll. But Bremen offers also many exciting new attractions: the Universum® Science Centre Bremen and botanika. An interesting excursion from Bremen is to the artists´ village at Worpswede on "Devil´s Moor". Accompanied by sea-going ships, we finally reach Bremerhaven, which is developing more and more into a maritime world of discovery. The town boasts a unique kaleidoscope of harbours and shipyards, historic tall ships and the fishery harbour where you can enjoy the freshest sea fish to be found anywhere in Germany.
