The Aller

Map of the Aller river
At the Aller and the Mittelland Canal you may discover a true highlight on the subject "Cars and Mobility"; Volkswagen presents a discovery park, the "World Forum of Auto-mobility" in a city interestingly established on a lagoon. Especially children with a thirst for discovery will enjoy the exhibits.

Lüneburg Heath
Then, a little further along the Aller, the river takes you through the southern part of Lüneburg Heath (see picture). The villages have a dreamy air, including the mill town of Gifhorn. The former royal capital Celle presents its proud half-timbered architecture. And the equestrian town of Verden will not only be appealing to horse-lovers. Take your children to the leisure park at Verden where you will be able to meet many of the popular fairy-tale characters.

The Leine and the Oker

Hannover's splendid town hall and Maschteich lake
In the hills along the River Leine the scene is characterised by castles and historic towns such as the university town of Göttingen, where the Brothers Grimm, writers of fairy stories, once lived and worked. Gradually, the landscape becomes flatter and the Leine flows purposefully into Hanover (see picture). The trade fair city which combines the modern and the historical, hosted the first World Exposition in Germany, EXPO 2000. The river Oker surprises with another change of scenery, leading you to the northern edge of the Harz nature reserve and into the medieval old town of Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its imperial palace and the 1,000 year old Rammelsberg ore mine.
