Further downstream on the Lahn, you come to Giessen and then Wetzlar where the young Goethe was inspired to write his first best-seller "The Sorrows of Young Werther". Braunfels is like something out of a fairytale and the fairytale castle, with its genuine medieval hall, sits in splendour in the town's historic centre. The royal city of Weilburg, situated high on a promontory and with terraced palace grounds, is a feast for the eyes. An interesting curiosity for boat tours is the river tunnel (see picture). In
Limburg the city's symbol, the impressive Romanesque cathedral, catches your eye immediately. In Bad Ems you can experience "made to measure" health treatments, where once crowned heads from all over Europe came to take the waters. A visit to Lahneck Castle which towers above Lahnstein at the mouth of the Lahn is also to be recommended.
