200 years of the Oktoberfest - anniversary programme and special celebrations in Munich

18 September to 3 October 2010
200 years ago on 17 October, a horse race was held in Munich to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. This marked the beginnings of what is now the largest beer festival in the world, an event which still takes place on the Theresienwiese grounds named after the bride. The 2010 Oktoberfest features an exciting festival programme to celebrate the anniversary. But before then, from 9 July, those with a thirst for Oktoberfest history can visit a special exhibition at Munich City Museum. Among its splendid exhibits are Princess Therese's wedding dress and Schichtl's guillotine, which is used in a popular Oktoberfest magic show.
